Simple Ways to Make Your Computer Last Longer

Your computer is a device with which you likely do a lot of things- from zoom conference calls to online gaming to streaming your favorite show. So of course you want it to last as long as possible.

Here are 5 simple ways you can make sure your computer has a long lifespan.

Keep it Clean

Dirt, dust, and other debris can wreak havoc on your computer’s internals.

There are different ways to keep your computer clean. You can store it in a place away from any potential sources of dust and dirt, like on the side of your room not facing an outside window.

Also, you can wipe it down with a microfiber cloth every few days. Don’t use any cleaning solutions on your computer, just the cloth will do. Or, you can use a can of compressed air to blow the vents clean.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Computers don’t function well in extreme temperatures; too hot and the battery may be damaged, too cold and the screen may be disabled.

It’s best to protect your computer from extreme temperatures. For instance, if you’re spending a day at the park for a Netflix picnic, take along an umbrella to keep your computer in the shade. Conversely, if you’re visiting a menopausal parent who likes their room in an assisted living facility really cold, bring along an insulated laptop bag so the temperature doesn’t cause damage.

Keep up With Software Updates

Software updates usually contain important security patches that can help protect your computer from viruses and other malware.

Most software updates will happen automatically, but you should still check occasionally to make sure everything is up-to-date. You can check for updates in the App Store on a Mac or in the Microsoft Store on a PC.

Do Not Leave it Plugged In

Battery health is important. Laptops that are constantly plugged in can overcharge, which will reduce the lifespan of the battery. Only plug in your laptop when you need to and unplug it as soon as it’s fully charged.

Leaving desktop computers plugged in all the time won’t cause as much damage to the battery. Still, it can cause other problems. For instance, power surges from thunderstorms can damage your computer if it’s plugged in. So unplug your desktop computer during bad weather.

Be Careful With the Ports

Computer ports are the places on your computer where you plug in things like USB drives and HDMI cables. While they’re designed to be durable, they can still be damaged if you’re not careful.

Avoid putting too much force on the ports when you’re plugging something in and unplugging it. Also, make sure any cables you’re using are the right size for the port- don’t try to force a bigger cable into a smaller port.

Maintaining your computer is important if you want it to last a long time. By following the tips above, you can make sure your computer has a long and healthy lifespan.
